Toys can make you deaf Scientists from University College London found 14 of the 15 leading toys sold last Christmas produced dangerous levels of noise. The worst offenders were toy guns — some of which resulted in an instant hearing loss. Today experts called for parents to avoid the worst offenders. “Children’s toys have the potential to do harm to their hearing so it’s important people are aware of the dangers and what to do about them,” said Dr Brad Backus, who led the study. “Our advice is simple: don’t let your child hold noisy toys too close to their ear and don’t let them play with them for more than an hour a day.” Vivienne Michael of Deafness Research UK warned the toys could lead to a deafness “timebomb”.
Getting your child to help you tidy up their toys We spend lots of money on them, want them to play with them, moan if they don't and grumble at the mess they cause. If you want them to tidy away after themselves, here's our top 5 tips to get that room clean. 1. Ensure they know that once they have finished with a toy, they should put it away. Having a toy box or cupboard is always handy and even if the toy goes is sideways, that is progress. 2. Praise their efforts - even a simple reward like a sticker will encourage them to want to do it more. 3. Make game out of it - sing a song, pretend it's a race, anything to make it a fun activity! 4. Let them be in control - make it feel like they are in charge of the process. They are their toys after all! 5. Don't stress - kids make mess. Let them play and enjoy their toys - it is a valuable part of growing up. It is also their home and as long as you teach them to be responsible, disasters can be avoided the majority of the time.
