As the number of people quitting

people to kick the habit
As the number of people quitting smoking last year falls by 24%, no
smoking day challenges 12 million people to kick the habit
It’s national No Smoking Day again, a day when a quarter of the
UK population – that’s 12 million smokers - are encouraged
to kick their habit. In fact, every year more than a million people
quit smoking on No Smoking Day. The campaign will also highlight the
benefits of stopping smoking and how to get help.
Research* shows that that 24% fewer people quit smoking
(April 2008 to September 2008), compared to the same period in 2007
– the months straddling the introduction of the smoking ban in
July 2007 – when the number of quitters was exceptionally high.
Worryingly, the number of smokers who managed to stay off cigarettes
four weeks after quitting fell to 133,704 2008, a 24% fall compared
to the same period in 2007 when 176,277 successfully quit. So how can
you quit for good?
Visiting a local pharmacy should be the first step for smokers who want
to quit for good on No Smoking Day. Pharmacists are at the front line
of helping people to stop smoking, and can provide expert advice and
support. They are also among the most accessible of healthcare professionals,
with branches open in the high street at convenient times, often when
GP surgeries are closed. 99% of people can reach a pharmacy within 20
minutes of their home and many offer private consultation rooms.

TAKE CARE IF CONSIDERING NEW YEAR DIETS

Need an excuse to rethink the New Year diet? How about
hair loss? The start of every New Year prompts thousands of people to
cut back in a bid to lose weight as they aim to turn over a new leaf.
However, a recent survey* showed that many of these do so without considering
the importance of vital vitamins and minerals, with 71% of women and
80% of men admitting they didn’t take a nutritional supplement
while on a diet. Some diets even warn participants that hair loss may
be a consequence.
As well as stress, age and hormones, poor diet is one of the most common
causes of hair loss. However, the importance of the regular intake of
vitamins, minerals and protein is often overlooked when the New Year
desire to lose weight rears its ugly head. But if you do insist on pursuing
that perfect body, then you may want to consider taking a protein rich
hair supplement to keep your hair in good health while you work on the
rest.
As GP and Naturopath, Deborah McManners explains, “It is well
recognised that poor nutrition may impair hair quality and people who
have been following weight reducing diets do comment that hair thinning
can be a consequence. Hair thrives on a plentiful supply of protein,
vitamins and minerals and a limited diet deprives the hair follicles
of these nutrients which can lead to hair loss. As such, a protein-rich
nutritional supplement taken during a period of dieting may help to
support healthy hair growth”
Viviscal is the latest advance in protein rich hair loss treatment and
contains the optimum level of nutrients to nourish the hair follicles
naturally from within, helping to reduce hair loss and promote existing
hair growth.
For many sufferers, losing their hair also leads to loss of confidence.
Two thirds of British women (73 per cent) and over half (52 per cent)
of men admitted the appearance of their hair affected their self image
according to a recent poll.
For further information about hair loss, there is also a expert-backed
consumer website www.managinghairloss.com,
supported by industry experts Dr Deborah McManners (GP), Terry Calvert
(Award-winning Hair Stylist) and Vetta Thompson (International Trichologist),
to help sufferers to understand the different types of hair loss and
their causes, how to recover from thinning hair as well as nutrition
advice and styling tips to encourage healthy looking hair. It is also
backed by TV personalities Jennie Bond and Cheryl Baker, who have themselves
suffered from thinning hair.
Viviscal, developed by Finnish scientists, has been widely scientifically
tested and contains a pure marine protein complex called AminoMar C™
- a combination of marine extracts, organic silica and Vitamin C - which
provides the essential proteins and nutrients for healthy hair.
The Viviscal range is brought to you by Lifes2good and is available

NEW ‘SUPER’ BERRY BOOST FOR
BRITAIN’S BUSY BODS

Selenium-ACE Plus Vitaberry Boosts
Antioxidant Support for Immunity and Vitality
We all start out with the
best of intentions, but too often our busy lifestyles get in the way
of healthy eating. In fact, with almost 80% of Britons failing to eat
their five-a-day1, it’s no wonder we sometimes feel as though
our energy levels and immune system are in need of an extra boost.
We know that eating a balanced, wholesome diet gives us that much needed
kick start. But when it comes to the healthiest eating habits, research
suggests that antioxidant berries should be a mainstay on our shopping
list, packing a powerful, vitality-fuelled punch.
With this in mind, NEW Selenium-ACE plus Vitaberry has been designed
to deliver the equivalent natural antioxidants of two portions of fruit
in a single one-a-day tablet, safeguarding vitamin and mineral intake
and so easing the way to a more balanced daily diet. This advanced combination
of antioxidants is based on the existing and effective Selenium-ACE
formulation, with a new and key ingredient, polyphenols, to help support
the body’s natural defences.
Polyphenols are naturally present in fruits, where they add taste, flavour
and colour – and they also have antioxidant properties. Research
shows that an adequate intake of antioxidant nutrients from the diet
may provide protection against excess free radicals, which have the
potential to damage cells and interrupt many body processes, hindering
the immune system.
Selenium-ACE Plus Vitaberry provides a quick and convenient way to boost
vitality and continually safeguard everyday intake with antioxidants
obtained from Grape seed extract Blueberries, Bilberries, Cranberries,
Cherries, Raspberry seed extract and Strawberries.
Rita Stoffaneller, nutritionist from Wassen International, comments:
“When plants use sunlight to grow, they produce many free
radicals and so have to produce strong antioxidants to protect themselves.
When we eat these plant compounds we achieve a similar protection, but
as our lives become busier it is increasingly difficult to eat our ‘five
a day’, and supplementation of these vital nutrients becomes more
and more important to boost our intake”.
Each Selenium-ACE plus Vitaberry one-a-day tablet contains the organic
essential trace mineral selenium, plus vitamins A, C and E with the
added benefit of natural antioxidant polyphenols from fruit, to help
maintain a healthy immune system and offer protection against free radicals.
Priced £5.95, Selenium-ACE Plus Vitaberry is available from Boots,
Tesco, Holland & Barrett, Waitrose and Morrison's. For more information
and further stockist details please call 01372 379828 or visit www.wassen.com.

CONQUER YOUR MIGRAINE AND GET YOUR LIFE
BACK WITH GINGER

Nature’s Best encourages
sufferers to tackle their migraines head on during Migraine Awareness
Week (7-13 September)
Nearly six million people in the UK suffer from migraines with 190,000
attacks occurring every day*. Two out of three sufferers are women**
and, in total, migraines cost the UK around £1 billion per annum***.
Since physicians do not fully
understand the cause of migraines, sufferers frequently remain abandoned
by their healthcare practitioner. As a consequence of this lack of understanding,
the condition is not straightforward to treat and where preventative
orthodox drug treatments do exist, many are associated with unwanted
side effects - not ideal when used on an ongoing basis.
Research with national charity Migraine Action, amongst extreme migraine
sufferers has found that the Nature’s Best ginger supplement produces
excellent results when tackling the debilitating symptoms of nausea
and vomiting associated with migraines. Nearly two out of three of respondents
(63%) felt that the course of Nature’s Best unique ginger extract
resulted in a positive outcome and 39% reported excellent or good results****.
Evidence shows that ginger has anti-inflammatory effects and anti nausea
effects, as well as the ability to reduce the ‘stickiness’
of the blood through its action on platelet activating factor.
Dr. Sam Christie, published
women’s health expert, comments, “Migraines are debilitating
headaches that can have a negative impact on one’s quality of
life. Migraine Awareness Week is an excellent opportunity to raise awareness
of the severity of migraines and its prevalence in the UK, especially
among women. Our research showed that a particular extract of ginger,
high in compounds called gingerols, can have a very positive effect
if taken regularly by sufferers.”
Lee Tompkins, Director of Migraine Action comments, “We recommend
ginger to help migraineurs who are looking for natural products as part
of their migraine management plan. Our members tell us that a ginger
supplement is especially effective at combating the nausea associated
with migraines.”
Nature’s Best is offering free advice to Migraine sufferers and
a free 30 day trial pack of Ginger as part of the Migraine Awareness
campaign.
Nature’s Best High Strength Ginger Extract usually costs just
£7.95 for 3 month’s supply. However to coincide with Migraine
Awareness Week, Nature’s Best is delighted to offer sufferers
the opportunity to try a special 30 day Free Ginger Trial Pack for just
a £1 contribution towards p&p.

West Row Hairdressing Extends Services
With Versatile Extensions!

Beat the credit crunch with the low cost
alternative to full-head extensions
Ann-Marie Atkinson is West Row's
hair extensions guru, and has travelled the UK as part of Racoon's Art
Team working on fashion shows and photoshoots. She loves the versatility
of the new partial extensions and temporary wefts, ideal for anyone
who wants extensions without the commitment.
Says Ann-Marie: “Everybody
thinks hair extensions are just for length, but there's a lot of other
things you can do with them - add fringes, add colour, even add volume.
They're a great way to try a trend without committing to having a fringe
cut in, or having your hair coloured, or spending ages trying to give
hair volume that it just can't manage!
“I tend to find that people
who come in with very fine, almost see through hair, love the extensions
because they're brilliant to fill this type of hair out. You can't tell
they're in so they're a great way to cheat! Partial extensions - fringe
and colour for example - is very affordable because we only add a small
amount of hair, so you can change your style without going over budget
or doing anything drastic such as short to long.”
Extensions are also perfect for
someone experimenting with colour for the first time, anyone sensitive
to colour, or anyone pregnant who doesn't want to colour with chemicals.
The salon also has shampoo, conditioner and products that are all specifically
designed for the hair extensions.
The new temporary weft extensions
are brilliant for one off styles, especially if you want to put hair
up for a special occasion such as a wedding, prom or party. They give
glossy hair on a short-term basis, lasting for a maximum of two weeks.
Extensions are available
West Row Leeds (0113 245 6220) and West Row West Park (0113 274 0999);
consultations are £25, redeemable against the extensions service
and products. Extensions start from £40 for partial extensions
to £300-£600 for a full head.

Whilst a small amount of stress can be a good thing, unwanted

is the single biggest cause of sickness absence in the UK.*
TV Stress Expert, Liz Tucker says: “When you are stressed out,
even simple tasks can push you to your limit. While there are many positive
changes you can make to improve your health and wellbeing, being able

all need a system in place to help deal with stress.” Whatever

Is snoring
ruining your relationship?
Whether it’s leaving the
toilet seat up or taking up too much wardrobe space, every annoying
habit can take its toll on a relationship, and snoring’s no exception.
New research from Breathe Right has revealed that almost a third (31%)
of snorers claim that the problem has a negative impact on their relationship,
while a staggering fifth of snorers and their bed partners (20%) say
it even has a negative impact on their sex life and impact on intimacy.
Suffering in silence is a common predicament with a third (31%) of snorers’
partners doing absolutely nothing to resolve the night-time nuisance
while a quarter (24%) of victims resort to sleeping in a separate room
to escape their partner’s snoring.
It seems that although a common problem (40% of UK adults snore), over
half of snorers (52%) and their partners (60%) have never even tried
to treat their snoring. Many couples are more likely to find a quick-fix
solution such as seeking refuge in a different room rather than looking
into the root cause.
Whether you are the snorer or their long suffering partner, there’s
an easy effective, drug free option you can try without having to compromise
on your bed or your relationship.
Breathe Right Nasal Strips simply work by gently opening nasal passages
to help you breathe through your nose instead of your mouth to reduce
or even eliminate snoring, meaning you - and your partner – can
get a better nights sleep.
Breathe Right Nasal Strips have been proven to improve breathing in
75% of snorers, improving quality of sleep and reducing daytime sleepiness
in 90% of snorers. In fact three out of four snorers’ bed partners
also notice the difference which means you can leave the arguments down
to what to watch on the television!
HELP PROTECT
YOUR TEETH FROM EROSION THIS SUMMER
The first sign of British sunshine
and the shorts and sandals are out in force, it’s also a time
to indulge in fresh fruit salads and light tomato pasta dishes. Acid
contained in citric foods and salad dressings temporarily softens tooth
enamel, making teeth more susceptible to acid erosion and sensitivity.
New from Colgate this summer,
Colgate Sensitive Enamel Protect Toothpaste has a gentle formula that
promotes remineralisation of the enamel, making it more resistant to
daily acid attacks from food and drinks
Colgate Sensitive Enamel Protect
has teamed up with celebrity chef Gino D’Acampo to create a tantalizing
summer dish that tickles all your taste buds, Gino D’Acampo says
“Coming from an Italian background, I love using tomatoes in my
cooking. However, tomatoes are highly acidic, but this doesn’t
mean you have to miss out on your favourite dishes – for a bit
of variation, try alternating tomato dishes with a cheese based sauce.”
Gino D’Acampo’s Rigatoni
al Ragu Bianco

(Serves 4)
Ingredients
500g dry Rigatoni pasta
200g minced Beef
100g minced Pork
100g minced Lamb
100g smoked diced pancetta
3 tablespoon Olive oil
50g salted Butter
1 Onion (finely chopped)
1 Carrot (finely chopped)
1 Celery stick (finely chopped)
150ml white Wine
200ml Vegetable stock
250g Mascarpone cheese
¼ freshly grated Nutmeg
4 tablespoon chopped flat leaf
parsley
100g freshly grated Pecorino
cheese
Salt and Pepper to taste
Method
In a large saucepan, heat the
olive oil and the butter and fry the onion, celery, carrot and pancetta
for approx 10 min on a high heat until softened and golden.
Add the pork, lamb, beef and
mix well allowing the minced meats to crumble. Cook stirring frequently
until the meat has browned. Approx 10 min.
Pour in the wine and cook until
evaporated. Season with salt and pepper and add the stock.
Lower the heat and simmer, without
the lid on, for 30 minutes. Stir occasionally.
Mix in the Mascarpone, parsley
and nutmeg and allow to rest for 10 minutes.
In the meantime, in a large saucepan,
cook the pasta in salted boiling water until al dente.
Drain and add immediately to
the sauce.
On a high heat, mix the white
Ragu and the pasta together with a wooden spoon for approx 1 min.
Serve immediately with plenty
of grated Pecorino cheese on top.
Help protect your teeth from acid erosion
with the following top tips :
· Try to limit your intake
of acidic foods and drinks to meal times and not immediately before
you go to bed.
· After consuming anything
acidic, wait for at least an hour before brushing your teeth.
· Try to minimise the
contact between acidic drinks and teeth, for example use a straw.
· Drinking water, milk
or eating a piece of cheese after eating acidic food can help neutralize
acid and reduce the extent of enamel erosion.
· Ensure you are brushing
your teeth correctly –speak to you dentist or hygienist and read
the information available on www.colgate.co.uk.
Using Colgate Sensitive Enamel
Protect twice a day can help protect teeth as it has a dual action that
helps remineralise tooth enamel and protects sensitive teeth.

It’s official – men have it better
in the bedroom…

… at least when it comes to sleeping. Research released today
by Breathe Right reveals that men are more likely to get a good night’s
sleep than women. With more than two in five men admitting to snoring
and nearly six out of ten women claiming that their partner snores -
the results are hardly surprising!
The research also shows that women are more likely than men to put up
with a snoring partner – nearly one in three women questioned
suffer in silence. However women are getting inventive – up to
one in six admit to rolling their partners on to their front to ease
the noise, and up to one in ten even pinch their partner’s nose
to stop them snoring! Men on the other hand are far less tolerant than
women of their partner’s snoring – more than half of men
questioned found it irritating (some even rated it as ‘relationship
destroying!)
Help is at hand, however with a far simpler option. More than half of
people questioned in the survey understand that how they breathe can
affect their snoring. When it comes to a good night’s sleep, breathing
matters. That’s why Breathe Right Nasal strips have been designed
to gently open the nasal passages, helping you to breathe through your
nose and not your mouth, providing a drug free way to help reduce or
eliminate snoring. In fact, 90% of snorers studied agreed that using
Breathe Right Nasal Strips when going to bed improves the quality of
their sleep and decreases feelings of daytime sleepiness associated
with a bad night’s sleep.
MEDICAL EXPERTS CREATE NON-SURGICAL FACELIFT
Dermatologist,
Medical Aesthetic Specialists, Nurses and Laser Experts Design Facelift
without Scalpel
London – 23 July 2008 – The Rejuvenate Clinic at the Private
Clinic in London and Manchester (www.theprivateclinic.co.uk) today unveiled
an innovative, three-step rejuvenation package known as the ‘Non-Surgical
Facelift’. The team of expert medical practitioners which includes
dermatologists, medical aesthetic specialists, nurse practitioners and
laser aestheticians have come together to combine their medical expertise,
utilising the best non-invasive treatments including dermal fillers
and the very latest laser technology, to achieve a facial rejuvenation
package for both men and women to regain a youthful look without the
need for invasive surgery and its corresponding downtime.
The Non-Surgical Facelift is a unique package tailored to suit each
patient, looking at a ‘whole effect’ approach of their overall
appearance rather than correcting individual lines, wrinkles or blemishes,
and combines:
Laser Skin Resurfacing – A laser treatments (for example Pixel
laser) on the face, chest and hands targets areas which noticeably show
the first signs of ageing. The recommended course of treatments reduces
fine lines and wrinkles by resurfacing the skin improving the skin complexion,
the skin texture and increasing the tone and volume as well as eliminating
sun damage and pigmentation for a youthful appearance.
For immediate results a muscle
relaxant is used on the upper third of the face to refine frown lines,
forehead creases and crow’s feet around the eyes.
The final treatment concentrates
on deep nose-to-mouth folds and fine lines around the mouth area using
dermal fillers like Restylane or a collagen stimulator such as Sculptra
.
Medical Director Roisin McGovern, who at 58 years old had considered
a facelift, decided after discussions with a plastic surgeon that she
would prefer a less drastic approach. She said;
“I lived in a
hot climate for many years which resulted in a lot of sun damage on
my face, chest and hands. I’ve always felt very young within but
my skin starting to look dehydrated, emphasising all the little wrinkles
and veins which give an appearance of ageing”.
To start her facial rejuvenation package, Roisin had a laser treatment
which reduces and refines fine lines and wrinkles and increases the
skin tone and texture to give it volume for a youthful rejuvenated appearance.
To complete the procedure, Roisin was given Restylane and Sculptra as
the ideal choice of injectable fillers to tackle other signs of wrinkles
and sagging. Roisin, who is now planning a further Pixel re-surfacing
laser treatment to maintain her desired look, added;
“Whatever age I have
been, I’ve found that happiness for me is to look the best I can,
regardless of how old I am”.
Dr Puneet Gupta, Cosmetic Physician, based at the Rejuvenate Clinic
is an Associate member of the British Association of Cosmetic Dermatologists
(BACD) and of the AmericanAcademy of Aesthetic Medicine. He specialises
in non-surgical cosmetic procedures involving the use of dermal fillers
and laser treatments and said;
“The effect that
is achieved with the procedure is that of an overall facelift. The treatment
includes using a Pixel Laser to re-surface the skin, followed by muscle
relaxant injections to refine the fine lines on the forehead and around
the eyes. Finally, to achieve a fully refreshed youthful appearance,
dermal fillers are used around the mouth to fill out deeper lines which
are tell tale signs of ageing”.
JONATHAN ROSS CELEBRATES HIS ‘BATHTA’
Fenjal Classic is celebrating
its 40th birthday by uncovering the bathing habits of British women
and their bath time desires!
Many women would readily bathe
with a celebrity! Simon Cowell and Jonathan Ross were amongst the least
desired celebs, gaining just 5% each. Despite the disappointment Jonathan
still boasted about his achievement on his show, proudly holding his
‘Bathta’! If it’s good enough for Jonathan, a Fenjal
bath is good enough for us all!
Unsurprisingly, David Beckham
(14%) topped the poll of celebrities most women would like to share
a bath with, but only just! Dermot O’Leary scored an unlucky 13%,
closely followed by Denzel Washington and Richard Hammond both with
11% each of total votes.
One issue that ladies could not agree on was: would they share their
spouse’s bath water? Women were divided with 40% against, whilst
a surprising 60% agreed they would! Picture the romantic scene: candles,
champagne and two in the tub… but this could not be further from
the truth! According to the Fenjal Classic survey almost 80% of women
would rather have a relaxing soak in a hot bath, than have an ‘early
night’ with their partner!
The survey ran on www.fenjalis40.com
to commemorate Fenjal, and forty years of making women feel special
every day. Log on to discover beauty tips, advice and play the fun Forty
Years Quiz, which will take you on a trip down memory lane!
Looking as good as the day it
was launched, Fenjal is synonymous with pampering, effective bath and
