MOS LAUNCHES THE BIGGEST EVER DANCE MUSIC SERIES

This spring sees Ministry Of Sound release one of the most comprehensive dance compilation series ever. The ‘Dance Years’ is a collection of the biggest and most important dance tracks spanning 1988 – 2008.

Each of the 20 albums is dedicated to a particular year, and the individual albums will be released in five chronological batches across 2009. The collectible nature of the series means the entire run will form a valuable addition to any music collection. In addition to the music, each physical release will contain sleeve notes detailing what happened within the scene during those twelve months.

The first five releases, ‘The Dance Years…1988/1989/1990/1991/1992’ will be released individually on 23 March 2009. Tracks include: Blake Baxter’s ‘When We Used To Play’, Maurice ‘This Is Acid’, Fast Eddie ‘Acid Thunder, and Inner City ‘Groovin’ Without A Doubt’, alongside cuts from S’Express, Bam Bam, Kariya, Mr Lee, Reese & Santonio, Was (Not Was), Neneh Cherry, Jolly Roger, and many more.

BBC 6 Music’s Dave Pearce has put together the entire series. Pearce, renowned for his long-running radio show, Dance Anthems, was the perfect candidate for such a mammoth task. As a radio and club DJ, he was instrumental in the first dance music explosion of the late 1980’s, helping the scene grow from a micro-culture into the worldwide phenomenon it is today.

Pearce has written a short foreword in each album, as well as providing the sleevenotes on the major club happenings of that year.

The Blake Sound Returns With The Release Of The Second Album, And So It Goes, By Top British Boyband

Blake, the award-winning boyband whose uniquely harmonious fusion of popular, classical and operatic numbers epitomise the zeitgeist of modern feelgood music, are releasing their long-awaited second album And So It Goes.

Their debut album, Blake, went straight in at Number One in the UK classical album chart and hit the Top 20 in the UK pop album chart, going gold within three weeks. It subsequently catapulted the boys to a stunning success at the Classical Brits Awards where it won the coveted accolade as Album of the Year as voted for by the public. Now And So It Goes looks to build on the band’s remarkable success in capturing the hearts of a devoted and fast growing audience from across the spectrum of music lovers.

Featuring a range of songs including Chasing Cars (Snow Patrol), Time To Say Goodbye, The Closest Thing To Crazy (Katie Melua), Up Where We Belong, Nella Fantasia and a unique take on Wild Mountain Thyme, the album showcases the passion and virtuosity of four very British boys, all trained as choristers who met on Facebook just 18 months ago and quickly realised that together they had something uniquely special to offer music lovers. Their soaring harmonies, youthful energy and genuine charm touched a chord with a wide range of fans who quickly identified with the Blake Sound as something fresh and distinct, almost redolent of the Beach Boys with its harmonies and vibes, and yet operatic in some of its crescendos..

On stage Blake are currently performing to audiences totalling well over 100,000 fans in their supporting role on the Katherine Jenkins Stately Homes Tour and they will be bringing their on-stage blend of passion, charm and charisma to supporting the popular soprano again at the end of the year in an extensive arena tour throughout the UK. They are also taking their music to a global audience this year with tours in Japan and Australia on the frenetic schedules for 2008.

Among the many who have expressed their love of the Blake Sound include Keira Knightly, Kate Middleton and Kevin Spacey who have all been wowed by the band’s music and onstage presence. To demonstrate the reach of their appeal, the band has also brought Twickenham to its feet, before a ball was played, with their stunning rendition of the England Rugby anthem “Swing Low”.

As well as devoting themselves to their music, the band also spends time individually and collectively supporting two charities close to their hearts which work ceaselessly for Britain’s armed forces and the loved ones who also pay the ultimate price for their heroism –Help For Heroes and War Widows. The new album has been described as one of the most awaited musical events of 2008. Fans will not be disappointed.

And So It Goes is released on 29th September by Universal Music

Maria Lawson

Brand new single - 'Breaking Me Down' - released September 8th
From the album 'Emotional Rollercoaster'
www.marialawson.co.uk

Maria Lawson is back this summer with the stunning single 'Breaking Me Down' taken from her second album 'Emotional Rollercoaster' due out in autumn. The single showcases what fans of X Factor grew to love about Maria's voice -
the impressive power, emotion and range that made her stand out on the prime time show. People who are new to the singer's music will be drawn to the strength of her lyrics and her stunning vocal ability.

Having slipped the silky chains of her record deal with SonyBMG, Maria's debut single from her new album combines contemporary pop with a prevalent hint of old school soul, resulting in a phenomenal track with an appeal that
will sweep the masses.

"'Breaking Me Down' is a love song but the other side of love when things start changing for one reason or another. You don't want to face reality because sometimes the truth is too painful and you are afraid to get hurt. It can also refer to my personal journey to get on in the music industry and having to leave Sony BMG and the past behind and move on. Sometimes you don't want to change but you have to embrace it in order to go forward". - Maria Lawson

Maria Lawson found fame in 2005 as the female favourite to take the X Factor crown. A controversial decision made by Louis Walsh in a crucial stage of the show found Maria out of the running in the fifth stage of the competition.

A media onslaught followed her exit from the X Factor show as Louis Walsh
was accused of being unfairly patriotic to Maria's rivals. Maria was catapulted onto the front pages of tabloids and celebrity magazines alike and Louis experienced a media backlash, while Maria's status escalated. Brian Rawlings, best known for his work with Maria's idol Tina Turner, has produced the album 'Emotional Rollercoaster' which sees Maria fuse soul, and
power pop whilst embracing a distinctive rock edge. Fans will have the opportunity to experience Maria's new material live at this year's Party In The Park in Leeds on July 27th.

Having given birth to her first child, son Brandon, earlier this year has a renewed passion for her creativity and is looking forward to this exciting new chapter in her life.

FLOBOTS meet THE KING BLUES

DOUBLE A SIDE SINGLE:
FLOBOTS “MAYDAY” – UK DEBUT RELEASE
KING BLUES “LET’S HANG THE LANDLORD”

RELEASE DATE:
4TH AUGUST 2008

Coming from different sides of the pond but with shared beliefs about social issues, Flobots and The King Blues, have much in common. In a world where few artists have little or anything of interest to talk about, Flobots and The King Blues certainly do.

Flobots are a rip roaring 6 piece fighting force who hail from Denver, Colorado who formed in 2005 in the aftermath of the previous years Presidential election. Compared to and a mix of The Roots, Rage Against The Machine and Linkin Park, they quickly elevated their shows to “socially aware” happenings and used their songs to express their aims and views. Their album “Fight With Tools” debuted at number 15 in the US Billboard album chart (it will be released in the UK in September) and the debut UK single is taken from this album. The single “Mayday” is an example of all the members spiking the explosive song with their own makings. Says Brer Rabbit, one of the two MCs of the band: “It’s one of our favourites. It seems to mean something different to all of us. I remember when writing part of the song I was thinking about how people are often caught between systems. The kids I worked with – caught between school pressures and the social worries – they always seemed to fall between the cracks so they’d have to carve out their own system.” Flobots are also majors supporters of the Barak Obama election campaign and are lined up to perform at the Democrats Convention in Denver this August.

The King Blues evolved from the squat scene in Hackney and are fronted by Johnny “Itch” Fox. The band themselves are outspoken on a number of social issues which have affected them in the past and are affecting people every day. The single “Let’s Hang The Landlord” is an auto-biographical track about Itch in his youth and the struggles he went through. The King Blues’ music is punk music as it was intended – engaging, forward thinking and all-encompassing. The new as-yet untitled second album will be released in October and reflects the evolution of a band who have gone from being threatened with ASBO’s for guerrilla performances at Canary Wharf and Westminster to shows at Wembley Arena. These days they’re viewing the bigger picture – and searching for solutions. “Initially we just wanted to be a soundtrack for the movement but now we feel that we have explored our art and opened our hearts,” says Itch. “As a result, our political ideas carry a lot more weight now.” Never has there been a better time for a band like The King Blues than now. Politically-sussed, constantly active but never dogmatic, they are the latest in a long tradition of well-read, well-intentioned British refuseniks representing the disenfranchised youth from the ground up. With war in Iraq still raging, a right wing leader in charge of their home city and an economy in decline, the world needs bands like The King Blues more than ever.

NEW SINGLE AND SPECIAL GUEST ON ELTON JOHN TOUR

Richard Fleeshman returns for the summer with his brand new single ‘Back Here’ on July 14th through UMRL.

Richard co-wrote ‘Back Here’ with Steve Robson, the man behind hits for Take That and James Morrison. “To me ‘Back Here’ is about being away from home and away from your best mates and family. It’s about change. I just spent a week in LA and that was a big change from being in Manchester. Having said that so many people have come up to me and told me what the song means to them so I guess it is open to interpretation.”

Richard has just returned from LA where he was called for a series of meetings with leading Hollywood producers about various film projects and US record labels about the release of his album in the States. He will be back in the US later this summer to consider his options after his forthcoming tour.

‘Back Here’ is taken from Richard’s debut album ‘Neon’ which includes the singles ‘Coming Down’ and ‘Hold Me Close’. “The album is blues and rock influenced with an acoustic sound but still pop,” says Richard. ‘Back Here’ became a live favourite with fans during Richard’s UK tour earlier this year.

Richard will be back on the road this summer. He has been chosen by Elton John to be the opening act on his summer arena and stadium shows across the UK. Elton John always picks up and coming musicians for his summer shows. Elton says about Richard : “When I heard ‘Neon’ I couldn’t believe how mature the record sounded and how developed and accomplished Richard’s songwriting is at such a young age. I was delighted to offer Richard a slot on my summer stadium shows.”

In the past Scissor Sisters and James Blunt have both opened for Elton on his summer stadium tours, before going on to worldwide success. “It’s an amazing honour,” says Richard. “Elton has always been an idol of mine but it is incredibly nerve racking as well. I’m going to ease myself into it by doing some warm up dates around the country before it. I cannot wait to go out there on.” The full list of dates is below. Happy 25th Birthday to ‘True’!

Spandau Ballet’s landmark No1 single celebrates it’s birthday on 30th April

On 30th April 1983, one of the UK’s most enduring, globally adored songs went to No.1 for four weeks in the UK, subsequently reaching this position also in 20 other countries. Spandau Ballet were on a tour in the UK when the single ’True’ was released from their third album (also named ‘True’). Both the single and the album hit the top of the charts and catapulted the band into worldwide superstardom.

Until that point, two singles from the album, ‘Lifeline’ and ‘Communication’, had both made the Top 10 but when the lushly produced, intensely romantic ballad ‘True’ hit No.1, everything changed. The already sold-out tour turned to pandemonium, and security needed to be brought in as thousands of screaming girls descended on the final dates. The band’s first No.1 was then celebrated at the party of all parties aboard a boat trip down the Thames after the band’s performance at the Royal Festival Hall.

To date, the timeless ‘True’ has notched up almost 4 million radio performances in North America alone, according to BMI, and continues to be a favourite on mainstream UK radio play lists and radio stations worldwide. It has been covered and adapted many times by other artists all over the world and has been particularly adopted by the R&B community and adapted and sampled with great success many times by, amongst others, PM Dawn, Teddy Riley, Nelly and most recently Lloyd. The track has also featured in countless feature films including blockbusters Charlie’s Angels, The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates and many, many TV shows worldwide. It is also soon to feature as the soundbed to a new M&S Food advert. ‘True’ is also, of course, the ‘our song’ of thousands, and a perennial beloved favourite at wedding discos the length and breadth of Britain!

On 5th May, EMI will celebrate this 25th Anniversary by digitally releasing a brand new ‘True’ EP, which will include the original single, a new mix by Gary Kemp and original co-producer Tony Swain, the remastered album version, plus a spine-tingling live recording of ‘True’ and another Spandau classic hit ‘Gold’ from the last show of that infamous 1983 tour, at Sadlers Wells.

This will then be followed in the Summer by a comprehensive Spandau Ballet ‘Sight & Sound’ CD & DVD which will include all the hits and their accompanying promo videos in one package.

Gary Kemp will be talking about the writing of ‘True’, and performing the song acoustically for the first time since he presented it to the band in 1982, in an episode devoted to him in a new series on Sky Arts, channel no. 267, called ‘Songbook’, first airing on 8th May.

‘True’ EP digital release: 5th May

David Garrett
Releases Virtuoso! March 24th

A VIRTUOSO IS BORN

He has already been dubbed the David Beckham of the violin, but this moniker isn’t just about his looks, it’s also a reference to the sheer dedication and hard work since the age of nine that has resulted in David Garrett becoming one of the finest players of his generation. Like Mr Beckham he enjoys international success, with album sales and sold out concerts across the globe.

David Garrett personifies the word ‘virtuoso’ , although he is just 26, he has been performing publicly since the age of ten with the Hamburg Philharmonic, then at twelve with the legendary Yehudi Menuhin and Isaac Stern, he also became the youngest person to sign a recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon.
He ran away from home in his teens to attend the Julliard School in New York, against his parent’s wishes, a rift that has still to be fully healed. Garrett is no ordinary Violinist, his raw talent has been honed by the finest teachers, including Itzhak Perlman at the Julliard. His life experiences have also given him the soul that makes his playing extraordinary. David plays not just with his fingers but with his heart.

David has already established himself in Europe, South America and Asia, with a series of sell out concerts, playing with top orchestras and conductors, including Sir Neville Marriner , Claudio Abbado and Zubin Mehta. Unusually for a violinist many of his fans are still at school and show an unprecedented level of enthusiasm at his concerts. Onstage David exudes charisma and showmanship, performing a mesmerising version of ‘Duelling Banjos’ (from the movie Deliverance) as a guitar duet, ‘Duelling Strings’, and his energetic show stopper, the ‘Gypsy Dance’ by Csárdás. His rendition of Flight of the ‘Bumble Bee’ has to be seen to be believed.

His debut album for Universal Music ‘Virtuoso’ reflects the tastes of a 26 year old who is clearly in love with melodies, no matter what musical genre they come from. Tracks include his own virtuoso interpretations of popular classics ‘Carmen’, ‘Paganini’, as well as romantic film themes, Morricone’s ‘La Califfa’, Bernstein’s ‘Somewhere’, and, as he considers himself one of the MTV generation, has created a brilliant symphonic reworking of the metal masters, Metallica’s ‘Nothing Else Matters’. To further show his multifarious talents, David has composed three very different pieces for the album. ‘Serenade’, a tale of heartbreak and woe, ‘Toccata’, a violin take on a modern sound and ‘Eliza’s Song’ a classic love song.
David is already enjoying phenomenal success in Germany with his album ‘Virtuoso’ outselling such greats as Pavarotti and Bocelli in the Classical charts and hitting the top 30 of the pop charts. In South East Asia his album entered the pop charts at No.3 just behind Mika and Avril Lavigne and straight in at No.1 in their classical chart.

David played his first solo concert in the UK at The Barbican on February 14th, the date immediately sold out.

The old saying ‘seeing is believing’ really does hold true when it comes to David Garrett.

The album ‘Virtuoso’ will be released on March 24th through Universal Classics and Jazz

“David Garrett is already the stuff of legend – in him is enshrined an entire corpus of virtuoso violin art, expounded with a fearsome beauty beyond comprehension.”
BBC Music Magazine

“Er spielt einfach wunderbar” (his playing is totally wonderful)
Yehudi Menuhin, legendary violinist

"I am delighted to have watched David Garrett`s development from the age of eleven. He is surely going to have a resounding presence on the music world of the 21st century."
Zubin Mehta, world famous conductor

"He is a wonderful violinist with excellent technique and natural musicianship. He will always perform with artistry"
Itzhak Perlman, celebrated violinist, who taught David in the US.

BLAKE TO BECOME AMBASSADORS FOR WAR WIDOWS

Classical supergroup Blake have been chosen to become ambassadors for the War Widows Association of Great Britain. Wanting to show their support for the men and women of the British Forces who are fighting on the front line, and those bereaved by war, they are to set about raising the profile of the association starting with a concert on 28th February at St. James Piccadilly.

Jenny Green, of the War Widows of Great Britain Association, said ‘We saw Blake perform at BBC1’s Festival of Remembrance, and thought they’d be ideal to help with our campaign. We’re overjoyed that we’re going to be working with Blake, and hope it will bring our work to a wider audience. We feel it’s a crucial message to communicate what the Association does, and Blake’s music speaks across the generations, making them a perfect choice.’

Dom Tighe, of Blake, says ‘all of us in Blake know friends or family who have fought for their country themselves or had a relative go off to war, and it’s a huge sacrifice that they make. We just want to help raise awareness of the War Widows of Great Britain Association and of the difficulties faced by those left behind when someone is killed.’

The War Widows of Great Britain Association is made up entirely of volunteers, and campaigns for changes in government legislation to benefit war widows, as well as organising support and help for them. There are currently 36,545 War Widows in the UK, and the association has 5,000 members, and it is estimated that there have been about 650 war widows made in the last few years.

Blake shot to fame last summer, having formed on Facebook, and had the biggest selling classical debut of last year, topping the classical charts and going gold. The four singers who started by singing Moon River to friends were soon gathering fans from Cilla Black to Keira Knightley, and even sung a surprise version of Happy Birthday to Dame Shirley Bassey at her 70th birthday party.

Newly signed to the Universal imprint W14 Music (Alison Moyet, Siouxsie Sioux, The Proclaimers), the first lady of jazz brings her magical touch to some of the greatest songs ever written - including ‘Cheek To Cheek’; ‘Begin The Beguine’; ‘Love For Sale’; ‘The Very Thought Of You’; ‘Time After Time’ and ‘Get Happy’ and innovative interpretations of more modern standards ‘Love Hurts’ and ‘Breaking Up Is Hard To Do’ – and adds to the catalogue of future classics with three new self-penned compositions.
“Some singers sing standards, some sing their own material, but very few do both and even fewer do it well. Clare Teal is one of those rarities” - The Observer

A unique singer, songwriter, broadcaster and live performer Clare Teal is an extraordinary talent and one of Britain’s most exciting entertainers. As John Williams, MD of W14 Music and co-producer (with Clare) of ‘Get Happy’ commented: ‘Clare is such a special singer – one of the UK greats – and working with her in the studio producing ‘Get Happy!’ has been an education and joy. The album is a masterclass of her song interpretation and vocal prowess.’

Recorded in just a matter of days with her five piece band ‘Get Happy’ bears testimony to Clare’s enjoyment of the recording process and the way she wholeheartedly embraces the challenger. On the familiar songs Clare has that rare, and almost unique, ability of making you feel that you suddenly hear the lyric as if for the very first time. On the original songs, ‘High Love’, ‘Get On It Sam’ and ‘All For Love’ Clare demonstrates her understanding of and passion for classic songwriting as she draws from the likes of Esquivel, Bacharach and the sounds of yesteryear and marries them with the lyrics that are inspired by her own life experiences

Winner of numerous awards including British Jazz Vocalist of the Year 2005 & 2007 and BBC Jazz Vocalist of the Year 2006, Clare is also a seasoned Radio 2 broadcaster. Having previously presented ‘Clare Teal’s Jazz Divas’ and deputised for Sarah Kennedy Clare is currently presenting both ‘The Big Band Special’ and ‘Al Bowlly - Britain's First Pop Star’, a series profiling the 1930’s singer.

Peter Cincotti

Peter Cincotti, the 23 year-old singer-songwriter-pianist, brings to life a fresh, cinematic world on his new Warner Bros. album EAST OF ANGEL TOWN. His profoundly evocative songs tell stories woven into melodies that are both individual and universal.
Although the native New Yorker has been writing music since the age of 9, EAST OF ANGEL TOWN marks Cincotti's first work of all original material. Exploring musical styles that blend pop, rock, blues, funk and jazz, Cincotti's percussive piano playing and rich vocals infuse each song with a startling energy. "I wanted each song to come alive in the studio with the same freshness they had when they were first written," he says. "Every element of the production needed to reflect that quality and, more importantly, serve the meaning of the song.”
With topics ranging from the seductive world of Los Angeles ("Angel Town"), male/female dynamics in today's society, ("Be Careful"), a symbolic song of loss, ("Goodbye Philadelphia"), loneliness and love in New York City (“Cinderella Beautiful”), each song tells a unique tale. These stories musically paint characters, both familiar and uncommon, that leave one with the feeling of having walked all day on the streets of Manhattan. When asked if such topics are autobiographical, Cincotti replies, "I think every expression is autobiographical-either literally or symbolically. I don't think it's possible to create something that isn't.”
The realization of EAST OF ANGEL TOWN began when Cincotti teamed up with noted producer and l4-time Grammy winner David Foster, producer Humberto Gatica, and producer/sound designer Jochem van der Saag. "We all worked so closely together every step of the way, and I feel lucky to have had such a tremendous team help me bring this album to life.” Cincotti also collaborated with award-winning lyricist John Bettis. “Writing with John has been such a special experience for me. He's been a partner on this record from the beginning and was the only collaborator I wanted to work with.”
EAST OF ANGEL TOWN's punchy, dynamic sound is simultaneously classic and modern. “This album is very much about the old and the new. Not only within the songs themselves, but also in the way we recorded them. I wanted to combine the classic way of live recording with the many elements of modern production.”
In a way, Cincotti has been combining the old and new ever since he burst onto the scene at age l9 when his debut album - filled with stellar interpretations of jazz standards - led him to become the youngest musician ever to claim the top spot on Billboard's Jazz chart. With his expressive voice, prodigious piano talent and understated charisma, Cincotti soon found his career in a whirlwind that included rapturous press (The New York Times called him "one of the most promising singer-pianists of the next generation").
And how would Peter Cincotti describe the theme of his new record - these brilliant observations and glimpses into the world around him, these stark portraits of unfinished lives? "Well, it's just that I'm always asking myself,” he says with a sly, mischievous grin- "What the hell's going on here?"

DEE ANDERSON – MAKE ME SMILE

Critically acclaimed Jazz sensation is back with her eagerly awaited second single: and she won’t disappoint!
The new Queen of Jazz returns with her outstanding new track, Make Me Smile, a beautifully haunting yet powerful ballad set to propel Dee Anderson into the jazz elite. After a critically acclaimed debut single, Black Skin Soldier, and album The White Rose, Dee’s new single unveils a new side to the talented musician and showcases her unique vocal style and sensitivity. She’s already been compared to the likes of Norah Jones, Diana Krall and Katie Melua, and now, after phenomenal demand, Dee’s brand new single will include The Telephone Song, which has received a rapturous response from her devoted fans and critics alike.
Dee is the daughter of famous husband and wife team Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, the creators of the cult television series' Thunderbirds, Stingray, Captain Scarlet and Space 1999. Her mother, Sylvia, was also the voice of Lady Penelope in Thunderbirds!
Born in Mississippi, USA, Dee came to London as a child, and grew up in a world of celebrity and entertainment. She spent much of her childhood with her grandparents. Her grandfather was one of the first boxers at the world-renowned Ring, at London's Blackfriars, and taught her many useful skills, including how to pull a real punch!
Influenced by her family and their successes, Dee’s own passion for music grew as she listened avidly to a variety of pop music in the family record collection, ranging from The Stones to Tom Waits and Bruce Springsteen. She was keen to pursue a singing and acting career upon leaving school, and so applied for Drama School, knowing that her parents were unhappy about her entering what they saw as an insecure profession. However, they soon discovered that Dee had not only applied and been accepted, but had also won a full scholarship. Realising her determination, Gerry and Sylvia gave her their blessing, and Dee completed her training.
The years of singing along to the family record collection paid off, and Dee was told to sing professionally. She embarked on a hugely successful career as an actress and singer, appearing on television and stage. Shows included 'The Elvis Show' in London's West End, with Toyah Willcox in 'Trafford Tanzi', and in the revival of 'Oh Boy', alongside Shakin' Stevens, Alvin Stardust and Lulu. She also starred with Adam Faith in a theatre version of Alfie, and worked with Peter Skellern and Wendy Craig in TV shows for the BBC. Over the years, she has appeared in 'London's Burning', 'The Bill' and a host of other TV shows.
Dee’s 2nd single, Make Me Smile, is out in October 2007.

MICHAEL BALL - Back To Bacharach

Release Date: October 22nd Label: UMTV
MICHAEL BALL’s beautiful new cd, Michael Ball - Back To Bacharach, is an impressive choice of classic tunes from the legendary composer’s outstanding canon of work. Back To Bacharach reflects Michael’s personal favourites and catapults him into a new musical direction.
“I’ve recorded a few Bacharach songs over the years and performed some in concert and always felt they suited me,” says Michael. “I love the stories, and the lyrics (many by Hal David) have always struck a chord with me, especially on the more serious numbers. Bacharach has such a brilliant ear for melody and his music has a completely timeless feel to it; I thought it would be great to do a whole album of his music and to record with a full orchestra and big band which is something I hadn’t done before. I thought it was also time I made a sort of ‘late night’ album with sophisticated arrangements – and he’s definitely the king of all that!”
Classic tracks include Make It Easy On Yourself which was a No. 1 hit for the Walker Brothers in 1965; You’ll Never Get To Heaven If You Break My Heart a huge hit for Dionne in 1964; (They Long To Be) Close To You immortalised by The Carpenters; Anyone Who Had A Heart chart toppers for both Cilla and Dionne; Alfie Bacharach/David’s Oscar nominated film theme from 1966 and the Oscar nominated The Look Of Love which was a huge hit for both Dionne and Dusty in 1967…
“Dusty Springfield was one of my all time favourite singers,” says Michael. “She was the rarest of talents, she pioneered a completely new sound and paved the way for a host of other female performers. Her ‘Dusty In Memphis’ is one of the greatest records ever made. We sang ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’ together on my TV show and it was the last public performance she made. It was absolutely thrilling singing with her – her version of ‘The Look Of Love’ is so sexy…I hope I’ve done it justice.”
More tracks include One Less Bell To Answer…
“Barbra Streisand recorded a medley of ‘A House Is Not A Home’ and ‘One Less Bell To Answer’ for her 1971 album Barbra Joan Streisand which I thought was beautiful. I had already recorded ‘A House…’ on my second album and really wanted to record One Less Bell. It’s a perfect and surprising song; it doesn’t go to places you would expect it to – the rhythms, the key signatures and so on – and it has a sense of drama which of course is what I like and what I do – I like to approach a song as an actor as well as a singer; as an actor I’m able to tell a story and this is one of his best storytelling songs. I love it.”
…and This House Is Empty Now with lyrics by Elvis Costello
“I recorded God Give Me Strength, another Bacharach/Costello collaboration; I just think the combination of these two huge talents is fascinating; there’s a pain to Elvis Costello’s lyrics which I find really powerful,” says Michael.
…and Arthur’s Theme (The Best That You Can Do) by Christopher Cross from the 1981 movie; This Guy’s In Love With You a hit for Herb Alpert in 1968; You’ll Never Get To Heaven another Dionne classic from 1964; Reach Out For Me and What the World Needs Now.
The result is a cool, sophisticated album – a departure for Michael whose multi-platinum award winning albums have seen him move through rock, soul, movie themes, classic pop songs and sweet ballads. It provides the perfect showcase for his unique voice and gives him the opportunity of exploring the songbook of Burt Bacharach, the 21st century’s equivalent of the Gershwins, Irving Berlin and the great writers of the American songbook. These are songs that are extraordinarily well crafted pop songs, classics of their time that have stood the test of time and that have retained their coolability, their fashionable status and their musical credibility.

BRITNEY TOO TOXIC FOR SWEDISH DUO

It says something when even an obscure Swedish duo trying to break into the music scene will snub you because they claim they’re “too busy”.

Now it’s transpired that the real reason fallen pop princess Britney Spears had her pleas for a collaboration with Lucky Twice turned down earlier this month was that the duo’s management feared an association with Britney would tarnish their clean-cut image.

“Britney’s had an amazing career but we don’t feel that working with her would be beneficial to the Lucky Twice image,” says an insider.

The teenage pair, Hannah Reynold and Sofie Larsson, have had a record 1.2 million visits on website Youtube, but despite their ambition for fame they are keen to distance themselves from Britney, who is now better known for her shaven head than her hits Baby One More Time, Toxic and Oops!... I Did It Again.

“We don’t want to be associated with her bad behaviour because Lucky Twice have many young fans,” adds the insider.

“The girls have sold millions of records and although helping Britney is a nice thing to do, it’s not worth risking jeopardising their image for her sake. I’m sorry.”

Ouch.
