Younger Children Children Teenage Grown-ups Audio Archive

East of the Sun

RRP £14.99
Julia Gregson. Read by Sian Thomas

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

It is easy to see why this is a Richard and Judy summer read. This is beautiful from the cover in, and Sian Thomas's velvet tones add to the exotic backdrop. Set in India in the late twenties, the story captures the opulence of the era well whilst showing that people themselves do not change and flaws have always existed .A touch of class.

A Giant Slice of Horrid Henry

RRP £14.99
Francesca Simon. Read by Miranda Richardson

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

Horrid Henry and the audio format are a match made in heaven, leading to madcap humour that guarantees fun! There are 3 CDs here - Horrid Henry's Stinkbomb, Horrid Henry's Underpants and Horrid Henry Meets the Queen, all guaranteed to keep them well and truly amused for 3 hours. Superb!

Chasing Darkness

RRP £14.99
Robert Crais. Read by James Daniels

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

Crime is a very addictive genre, with morbid curiosity being unable to resist. Great writing creates some nice twists in this book set in L.A. We enjoyed the fact it is also narrated by an American, adding authenticity to the story. There is a lot in this book and at five hours long, will satisfy your thirst for justice.

Dolphin Song

RRP £12.99
Lauren St John. Read by Ruth Wilson

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

This is a wonderful audio book for older children! Of course, the dolphin theme is very appealing, but this isn't all warm and fuzzy and has a good dose of adventure. Set in Africa, the audio format truly brings the atmosphere to life in a way we don't feel the book can the same. The heroic undertones are great for the target audience, who should lap up the whole story.

No Time For Goodbye

RRP £14.99
Linwood Barclay. Read by Christopher Lane

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

We enjoyed this immensely. Down as one of Richard and Judy's summer reads, this thriller lives up to its genre. Teenager Cynthia wakes after a rebellious night out to find her family gone and the book then focuses on 25 years later when the mystery rears its head again. The audio format portrays the thriller well, with Christopher Lane's voice adding tension and suspense.

Call the Midwife

RRP £14.99
Jennifer Worth. Read by Stephanie Cole

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

Books that give us history, but portrayed with realism by being told by people who were at the cutting edge. Jennifer Worth was a midwife in the East End of London and this story takes us back to the 1950's. The book overflows with humour and spirit through some pretty tragic circumstances, and thank goodness someone has put such stories onto paper. Stephanie Cole naturally tells the story as if she was Jennifer, something that always gives the audio CD an extra angle.

Outcast

RRP £14.99
Michelle Paver. Read by Ian McKellen

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

An audio CD read by Sir Ian McKellen? Does the story matter?? His voice suits the genre of the book totally, being fantasy based, so his Harry P roles mean that his voice is familiar to a younger audience. The book itself is crammed full of great description, and as the author has looked deeply into the era in which the book is set, it has paid off big style. With animal slaying and human torment, don't expect twee, but do expect class.

Dan Dare: Voyage to Venus Part 1

RRP £12.99
Frank Hampson. Read by Rupert Degas, Tom Goodman-Hill, Kate O'Sullivan & Christian Rodska

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

The hero of many childhoods arrives on audio Cd for the first time - ever! And the audio format works perfectly, with sound effects and narration that recreates the suspense, this outing makes this feel totally up to date. So with an appeal that spans generations, this comic legend has flown with ease into the 21st century.

Strip Jack

RRP £14.99
Ian Rankin. Read by James Macpherson

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

Of course, it goes without saying that if you've loved the previous, this one will impress too. We found this slighly more predictable and the MP/brothel scenario over familiar, but put that tl one side (which is easily done) and you are back to a class act. This is easy to listen to despite the maybe uncomfortable genre, but that is what Rebus is about. For me, the TV visual helps my enjoyment of the audio experience by making it more vivid, but I am aware this may feel different for other listeners.

Heart-Shaped Box

RRP £25.00
Joe Hill read by Stephen Lang

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

Ghost stories meet the contemporary world in this totally outstanding audiobook. There is always a temptation to think that this format is more for the elderly, but happily this blows that theory well out of the window. It seems a tad unfait to mention that Joe Hill's Dad is none other than Stephen King, but relevant, as the Son has taken his Dad's talent anf formatted into a genius book that stands up in its own right. Goths, ghosts and a good dose of rock, make this a huge winner for us.

Wycliffe and the Pea Green Boat

RRP £14.99
W J Burley read by Jack Shepherd

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

Isn't is just great when the person who played the book's main character on TV, reads the audio book too? The mixture of all these popular formats in one neatly sized package can only equal enjoyment. The pea green boat is a reference to a murder after a fishing boat is booby trapped, thereby unravelling events in a family that happened many years previous. The subject may be murder, but the listening experience is far from that.

The Bourne Betrayal

RRP £16.99
Robert Ludlum read by Jeremy Davidson

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

Jason Bourne is so popular a character that films have been made, so the arrival of this onto audiobook is very welcome indeed. As often happens with such fiction today, this outing is centred around terrorism and the US. This obviously adds realism, as does the narration which keeps you in suspense and always with a slight fear something bad is about to happen. The audio CD brings this novel to life brilliantly.

Tyler's Row

RRP £14.99
Miss Read read by Carole Boyd
Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

This tale truly is one of modern times, with a row of cottages coming up for sale in the village. Gossip is rife about what will happen, but when it comes to light that renovation is in the offing, the new owners find their dreams don't quite go to plan. Again, the book is read by Carole Boyd and this outing is, in our opinion, even more full of expression - it comes across that the reader is enjoyinbg what they are reading!

The Prestige
RRP £14.99
Christopher Priest read by David Thompson, Jonathan Keeble, Peter Kenny & Clare Wille
Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

We loved the whole feel of this book, very vividly taking you back to Victorian times. In a story of class, respect, skill and dedication, it is not only the stage illusions that are shrouded in mystery. You almost feel as you are there, in the almost macabre setting of a dim lit music hall, and that shows great writing to create that atmosphere. Of course, as it’s audio, that has to come through in the narration to, but Orion are masters of their craft.

Hold Tight
RRP £14.99
Harlan Coben read by Tim Machin
Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

We have read a Harlan Coben book before, so know how well he creates tension and suspense, so will this come through on audio? The story is loosely one that parents of teens will relate to – not knowing what their children do on the computer. Out of concern, they decide to spy, and unwittingly become embroiled in something more sinister than they could have imagined. The tension came through well on audio, especially as as the reviewer, I can relate to the parental trauma (though obviously to a lesser extent!). Harlan Coben has not disappointed with this title.

Over the Gate
RRP £14.99
Miss Read read by Carole Boyd
Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

Miss Read’s gentle charm laced with a quaint humour overflows in this book. Over the Gate is, as it suggests, a view on quirky village life, both observed and passed on through chit chat. It really conjures up visions of the past whilst making you realise that people, in essence, are always the same. This is a warm book, and the narration reinforces that fact.

Sisters in Arms
RRP £14.99
Nicola Tyrer read by Barbara Flynn and Sian Thomas
Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

The story of war is one that needs forever preserving and also can’t fail to be fascinating, especially as we find it hard to imagine how we would survive in those circumstances. Here we meet the Queen Alexandra nurses, who witnessed the worst parts of war by tending the injured. There couldn’t be a more perfect choice for narration than Barbara Flynn, unless it was Sian Thomas, so having both seals the deal. Listening as opposed to reading takes you there and makes it as vivid as it could be.

Allie Finkle’s Rules for Girls: Moving Day
RRP £12.99
Meg Cabot read by Teresa Gallagher
Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

Our reviewer really enjoyed this book, and especially liked the audio format which she hadn’t experienced before. The story sees Allie leaving her old house where she was happy and moving to an old, spooky house and changing schools. With everything different, the storyline is one some children will relate to from their own lives and reassure them that change can be good.

The Irresistible Inheritance of Wilberforce
RRP £14.99
Paul Torday Read by David Rintoul
Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

This is a fascinating book that takes you into the mind of a man outwardly confident and achieving but inwardly flawed. As we know, life can change in a moment, and here we see Wilberforce’s life alter dramatically. Incredibly well written, the ensuing tragedy could seem deserved, but instead makes you examine life itself. Surely, that is the sign of an incredible book, and on audio CD, it gives you the opportunity to reflect as you listen.

The Rose of Sebastopol
RRP £14.99
Katherine McMahon Read by Clare Wille
Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

This book is a dream on CD format. Full of spirit, warmth, historical relevance and passion, your imagination is transported well and truly back to the Crimean War. Clare Will’s voice has the perfect tone and strength to carry the story through. This is another Richard and Judy award nominated book, meaning this is a unmissable book in any format.

The Secret Diary of a Grumpy Old Women Aka A Year in Big Knickers
RRP £12.99
Written and read by Judith Holder

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

Hmmm…being 40 …does life begin? Or are you just too darn busy to notice? We expect the latter, and this book is full of those things that irritate you, yet you don’t admit to. The great thing about having this on CD, is that it’s just like having a riotous chat with a friend! Pure enjoyment, albeit at your own expense.

Time to say Hello:Katherine Jenkins – The autobiography

RRP £13.99
Written and read by Katherine Jenkins

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

We firmly believe it is a great testament to an artist when they make the effort to read their own autobiography. Undoubtedly it adds to the whole experience, and reinforces the sincerity behind what you hear. Katherine’s soft Welsh accent is well known and ideal for audiobook purposes, and the story one of determination and deserved success.

God is not Great

RRP £14.99
Written and read by Christopher Hitchens

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

You sometimes feel that audio books will tell you a story, fictional or not, but what we really liked about this is the way it challenged the mind. As the title suggests, this focuses on the author’s view of religion, and why a lot of the Bible’s content can be explained by more scientific reasoning. Whether you agree or not, the argument is compelling, and Christopher Hawkins is an eloquent and convincing voice for the content.

Tooth & Nail

RRP £13.99
Ian Rankin. Read by James Macpherson

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

Rebus is on form as ever, investigating a serial killer known as the Wolfman. Apart from the usual police politics and realistic scenarios, there is a glimmer of romance here too, making it slightly different again from previous titles. Read superbly, as always, by James Macpherson, means the continuation of narrative voice is like inviting an old friend back into your home, one whom you trust wholly. That can only add to the stories authentic feel.

A Quiet Belief in Angels

RRP £14.99
R.J. Ellory read by Garrick Hagon

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

Here is another Richard and Judy award nominated read, so it is essential it has been brought to the audio format. Garrick Hagon’s smooth tones create an almost eery atmosphere by voice alone, and adds tension that reading alone can only be created by the reader. The story is absorbing but does deal with the murder of children, so be prepared to be emotionally involved.

In the Night Garden – Let’s go into the garden

RRP £5.99

Publisher: BBC Audio

Stockist: Amazon

If you have kids, Igglepiggle, Upsy Daisy, Makka Pakka, the Tombliboos and the Pontipines will be very familiar, as ‘In the Night Garden’ has been a massive BBC pre school hit. This audio CD is very relaxing and great for putting into the CD player to put them asleep at night.

This Year it will be different

RRP £14.99
Maeve Binchy. Read by Kate Binchy

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

Maeve Binchy is an incredibly popular author and has a remarkable way of putting real life into words. Christmas is the season of goodwill and peace to all men, but in modern families this is the ideal as opposed to the reality. This 5 CD set contains 5 different stories, each with a very different set of circumstances set against the Christmas backdrop. Full of poignancy and perception, there are plenty of opportunities to both laugh and cry. We also very much like the fact it is read by Kate Binchy, Maeve’s cousin, adding even more reality and honesty.

Grizzly Tales:Gruesome Grown Ups Part 1

RRP £5.99
Story by Jamie Rix. Read by Rupert Degas

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

Parents and teachers are horrible, aren’t they? In the eyes of children, they often are and although these stories are exaggerated it, children will love the mischievousness. Listening on CD makes them feel like they belong to an exclusive gang where grown ups don’t belong, and this type of escapism is great for their development. Rupert Degas’s voice has a booming quality that can express all emotions, and adds lots of fun and humour to this fantastic CD.

Down the Line

RRP £15.99

Publisher: BBC Audio

Stockist: Amazon

Is it a real phone in show, or a show about a phone in show? This Radio 4 comedy show brilliantly spoofs the radio phone in show format – this type of comedy works remarkably well on TV and just as well, if not better, on radio. The 3 CD set stars comedy greats such as Paul Whitehouse, Charlie Higson, Simon Day and Amelia Bullmore and has a ‘Fast Show’ feel to it accordingly. There are also special guest stars which add to the authenticity of the whole thing.

Charlotte Church - 'Keep Smiling'

RRP £13.99

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

Love her or not, no one can dispute that Charlotte Church’s life story must make fascinating reading, and trust us it does. Lots of celebrities release autobiographies with only a couple of years of success, but not so Charlotte. This is not the idyllic story the public perceived when she was a young superstar, but delves into what early mega success can bring to even the most grounded. Being read by Charlotte is a great bonus. Her bubbly voice adds realism without hiding the truth. The story is as far up to date as her pregnancy, so there are no corners cut.

Here we have a real fan’s dream – all 3 series from BBC Radio 4 along with never broadcast sketches and interviews. We always enjoy comedy performed in front of a live audience as you get a genuine reaction. It’s great to know what you’re laughing at, others are too, and let’s face it, David Mitchell and Robert Webb are very funny indeed. 10 CDS, near enough 10 hours of listening, must surely lift even the gloomiest of days.

Trevor’s World of Sport series two

TS Sports Star Agency attracts larger than life sports personalities which make for great comedy. Team that with office staff with larger than life personalities too, and you can see how this makes fantastic radio. You can imagine this was hilarious to write, funny to perform, and this comes through with the performances. Neil Pearson stars, so comedic value is guaranteed.

Jacqueline Wilson – ‘Kiss’

RRP £20.00

Publisher: BBC Audio

Stockist: Amazon

We all know that Jacqueline Wilson is just fab, and to have her read aloud her wonderful creations makes it all that bit more special. ‘Kiss’ is a book about teenage love, teenage feelings, and discovering who you really are. There can be no one else other than Jacqueline who can deal with sensitive topics in such an honest and utterly warm way, and whilst the subject matter may make it suitable for older children and teens, it is refreshing to deal with teen matters without the angst and gloom that often accompanies such literature. Today’s teens know and trust Jacqueline, and hearing her voice too, is like going to your favourite, most trusted Auntie for advice.

Clare in the Community – Series 2

RRP £15.99

Publisher: BBC Audio

Stockist: Amazon

As we can’t always commit to listening to radio series, we were delighted to get the chance to review audio books of them instead. Clare is what is perceived to be the stereo typical social worker, determined to sort out others problems, but unable to find a balance in her personal life. Sally Phillips is the perfect vehicle for Clare, and has managed to attract an amazing Radio 4 audience of over half a million. The humour has a great mix of sarcasm and perception that totally draws you in. If you haven’t experienced radio series before, try this and you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

The Bourne Trilogy CD Box Set

RRP £40.00
Robert Ludlum read by Jeff Harding

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

Having your books turned into major blockbuster Hollywood films is as much of a compliment as you can get. This CD boxset contains the 3 stories, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum – that’s 18 CDS and 20 hours listening. Jeff Harding is a seasoned audio narrator and is spot on in translating the tension and thrill of the text into a listening experience. We wrongly imagined this would not be possible, but the whole set conjures up the scenarios well.

How to talk to a Widower

RRP £14.99
Jonathan Tropper read by Eric Ruben

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

This is a pearl of a book! I can not recommend it highly enough. I have never been through the emotions of losing a partner directly but have listened to those who have and the emotion most definitely comes through. Set in the New York suburbs, and read by a native New Yorker, gives it a definite American vibe, reminiscent of the stuff top TV dramas are made of. Doug is only 29 when he’s widowed and left with a teenage step son. He struggles emotionally and the story sees Doug trying to rebuild his life. This is one of Richard and Judy’s ‘Summer Reads’ and rightly so.

Maggie’s Tree

RRP £14.99
Julie Walters

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

Ooh a double treat! A book that is brought to life on a CD by the author, and if they can’t give it the exact intended interpretation who can, When that author is a leading actress too, you have the best of everything! I had heard this novel was quite complex and took time to get into, but by going down the audio book route, there was no feeling of that whatsoever. When actress Maggie goes missing on a trip to New York, relationships between and about friends unfold. The story isn’t a light comedy but then neither is life, but there is a definite underlying humour which takes the story along.

Agent ZigZag: Lover, Traitor, Hero, Spy

RRP £14.99
Ben Macintyre read by Anthony Head

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

It’s the early 1940’s and World War Two dominates lives in Britain. This true story takes into the world of the heroic spy but our hero here is comparatively flawed. Eddie Chapman was a pre-war criminal and a magnet to villainy. However, twists of fate can alter circumstances. The voice of Anthony Head perfectly portrays the 1940’s era and the secretive world of British Intelligence. As a lover of world war fiction, it is great to see the reality from a very different perspective and you feel like you are getting an honoured glimpse into what you shouldn’t really know.

News from Thrush Green

RRP £14.99
Miss Read read by Clare Higgins

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

Listening to this on CD, I couldn’t help but be reminded of ‘The Archers’, and how well it would translate onto radio too! Life in the village of Thrush Green is never dull and without overdoing the storylines and hence making them unrealistic, you really feel this is a real community and find yourself involved with the character’s and their lives. The warmth comes shining through with Clare Higgins reading and you can’t resist a chuckle or two as neighbours watch the arrival of a newcomer behind twitching curtains!

Last Post

RRP £12.99
Story by Max Arthur. Read by Max Arthur, Paul McGann and Clive Mantle

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

Words can not describe how important it is that the stories of the last soldiers of the First World War are documented, as those who have lost relatives with untold stories will know. Having previously read the book, it is amazing how listening to it on CD brings it to life. The narrators may not be the actual soldiers but may as well be as you are transported back nearly a hundred years. It is deeply interesting and moving in equal parts and humbles you as a listener, here due to the sacrifice they made. Every home should have a copy of ‘Last Post’ and ensure future generations are kept aware.

Duncan Bannatyne:Anyone Can Do It

RRP £13.99
Story by Duncan Bannatyne. Read by David Rintoul

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

With Duncan Bannatyne now a high profile TV business guru, we know his story is one of rags to riches and we have been left wanting the gaps filled. There can’t be many people who wouldn’t find his story both inspirational and compelling in equal measure. As a self made man, his struggles are easily identifiable and you are left wondering if you could achieve similar. David Rintoul’s narration is absolutely appropriate, native accent aside, and by listening on CD as opposed to reading, Bannatyne’s journey seems all the more real. His is a very interesting story indeed.

Aches and Pains

RRP £9.99
Story by Maeve Binchy. Read by Kate Binchy

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

Detective Inspector John Rebus is back and investigating the disappearance of a student in Edinburgh. The scene setting is vivid and the narration by a Scot, actor James Macpherson, essential to bringing the story to life. This modern day crime thriller sees DC Siobhan Clarke put into danger via an online role playing game, giving the story plenty of appeal to listeners other than lovers of police drama. There are hours of listening here, enabling you to tackle the story in stages – the advantage of this is that your mind deepens the suspense in the interim.

The Overlook

RRP £14.99
Story by Michael Connelly. Read by Michael Brandon

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

Regardless of title, a book read by Michael Brandon is worth every penny in itself, but as an added advantage, the story is equally enticing. Harry Bosch works for Homicide Special, dealing with the murders that make major headlines. This time it’s international terrorism, a subject relevant to modern society making it a relatable subject matter. The suspense is portrayed perfectly by Brandon – those who remember his TV parts will know he is the perfect voice for the narration and those who don’t remember him will soon find similar. A gripping thriller flawlessly transferred on to CD format.

Young Wives Tales

RRP £14.99
Story by Adele Parks. Read by Phil Hearne, Sara Markland, Clare Wille with Peter Kenny

Publisher: Orion Publishing

Stockist: Amazon

A story of three younger women whose lives are intertwined but not always through positive experiences. This is chick lit with a darker side, making it a realistic modern story. By listening to it on audio CD, the readers make the characters far more rounded and add a believability factor. Taking nothing away from the written form, the addition of voice made us actually compare the characters with people we know! The story explores relationships and friendship with an uncanny perception that makes it addictive stuff. Instead of being tempted to turn another page, you will find it hard to press stop on the remote.
